Volume Control was made as part of the Crossplay game jam, a collaborative effort between the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and Bradley University. Honestly, I was a bit all over the place for this game jam. With a semester-long project for the student organization and Theory of Algorithms homework to worry about, I didn’t think that I’d participate in this game jam. However, in the final hours of the jam, I created a minigame for Volume Control- Monkey Say Monkey Do.
Essentially, intentionally bad breakcore music plays while a poorly drawn monkey says various three-word combinations of “low,” “medium,” and “loud!” The player is tasked with making noises that follow the string of given adjectives. Oh, and when I say “making noises,” I literally mean with the player’s mouth. Each of the three minigames in Volume Control require a microphone to be played. The other two games were made by my buddies- variations of Breakout and Space Invaders.
It’s crazy for me to believe that my student organization will host one last “true” game jam before I graduate. I don’t know if I want to go in with an idea, but I’d like to make another game with my buddies, I think.
