MAGD488. The culmination of the Media Arts and Game Development program at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. This team projects class throws its students in a realistic game studio scenario- the entire class is tasked on working together to create a game. I’ve heard tales about this class since my Freshman year, and I couldn’t wait to get started.
On the first day of class, we were split into groups to come up with pitches for the class project. My group’s pitch didn’t end up winning, but instead, a pitch by the name of Sky Die.
The idea essentially involved four players battling it out while free-falling from the skies. The goal was to be the last player standing. This idea hit the set goals for the project- the game had to involve same-room multiplayer and be competitive in nature.
Roles were also chosen- programming, design, art, music, etc. etc. Additionally, students had the opportunity to apply for a lead role. I applied, and I received the role of programming/design lead.
We had a bumpy start, but after hunkering down and hammering out a game design document after three days, we all had a game plan. My number one goal is to get this game on Steam, which would make this the second 488 project to make it there.
We’ll see what the future holds.
