I’ve never read Lord of the Flies but I hear about it a lot. Apparently (Wikipedia says), it’s about a group of boys stranded on an island and their failed attempts to govern themselves. Wikipedia also adds that “the novel’s themes include morality, leadership, and the tension between civility and chaos.”
I mentioned in a previous blog post about a so-called “bumpy start.” Truthfully, it was very bumpy. Essentially, we were spending a lot of class time solidifying what the game should be. I would go up to a whiteboard, and the class would provide their input on different ways to go about aspects of the game. I wanted everyone to help mold the game together, but I quickly realized that was not the way to go. Conversations would go in circles- people had great ideas, but there were just too many. I came to the conclusion that someone had to sit down and set in stone what the game would look like, and I took a great deal of that responsibility.
For three days, I wrote the Sky Die game design document. I tried to be as thorough as possible, answering essential questions that would be asked. The next class, I proudly shared the GDD. Better yet, people began to have tasks to work on.
I don’t think a lot of people will get this opportunity that I have right now in this class. It feels like all of my leadership opportunities have culminated for this game.
No biggie.
